In medieval times the term bay was used to denote a section of a room where large windows were placed behind the location of the high table or dais. These sectioned windows later became known as bay windows. It was only during the early 1870s that this window style became popular with homeowners. Today you will find many houses that have this style of windows. The many different bay windows have also been called bow windows by some people. There is however a marked difference between these two types of windows. This difference has mainly to do with the windows than with anything else. In baw windows you will have four casement windows.
