SLED 10 Service Pack 1 is achingly close to release, as Novell have begun sending out e-mails asking potential punters to buy it now and enter a draw for a lovely ThinkPad T60. I wouldn't mind one of those, so long as it matched the speed and grace o...

I've just installed SuSE Linux 10.0 on the ThinkPad and I'm impressed. I think Slackware is still fantastic for servers and desktops, great for learning Linux, but for out of the box convenience, especially for a laptop, SuSE 10 is awesome.
Here's...

Since starting to learn Linux, I've shied away from compiling and configuring my own kernel.
There were two main reasons for this.
First, it seemed quite a scary thing to do. It's real easy to zap a working system.

This wonderful site charts the rise in numbers of Linux users. It can also tell you the average up times of the different kernels.
My three currently used kernels are doing quite well.
Kernel 2.4.29 hosting this blog - 67 day average.

I spent a lazy Sunday afternoon fiddling with my hand-rolled 2.6.15.4 kernel on my ThinkPad.
There were two small matters which required my attention.
First was to make sure that when I logged in, the console text was not the jagged unaliased t...
