Filed under: Diesel , Mercedes Benz Mercedes-Benz GL350 Bluetec - click above for high-res image gallery Every autumn, the Texas Auto Writers Association holds a two-day truck rodeo to determine the best in class in all of the different segments of the truck market. Out of all of this year's SUV competitiors, the auto writers (do they actually sell any cars in Texas?) picked out the updated Mercedes-Benz GL350 Bluetec. The big GL was among 16 SUVs put to the test by the 41 journalists and was the first ever European model to win the category. The GL's 210 hp and 400 pound-feet of torque help it get a 7,500 pound tow rating, The EPA rates the GL350 at 17 mpg city and 23 mpg although on a recent stint with the GL, we averaged just over 23 mpg combined, easily topping our best results to date with any of the GM hybrid SUVs. The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is an Anglo-German supercar jointly developed by Mercedes-Benz and McLaren Automotive, built in Portsmouth and the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, Surrey, England. Daimler AG, owner of Mercedes-Benz, also owns 40% of the McLaren Group. Due to the presence of the automatic gear box, front mid-engined arrangement and its driving characteristics lead some commentators to classify the SLR McLaren as a GT whose rivals can be considered to be vehicles like the Aston Martin DBS V12, Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, and Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. Mercedes decided to drop the SLR due to lack of sales in late 2007. SLR stands for "Sport, Leicht, Rennsport" (sport, light, racing). Filed under: Mercedes Benz We're used to hearing about European cars being equipped with automatic start-stop systems that shut down the engine when the vehicle is stationary. In 2008, Mercedes-Benz began offering such a system on its Atego medium duty trucks, and the technology is proving popular. In the first half of this year, sales of the Atego equipped with the auto start-stop have jumped significantly. Through the end of June, Mercedes moved 2,600 Ategos with start-stop; compare this to 1,100 in all of 2008. Like other such systems, the engine shuts down when the truck comes to a halt with the transmission in neutral and clutch pedal released. With turbo 6 cylinders supplanting V8s and fours taking over for sixes, the current fours are likely to be replaced by boosted twins and triples in the near future. Volkswagen and Fiat are known to be working on the former and BMW and Mercedes are evidently developing three-cylinder units. At the Stuttgart automaker, three cylinder engines are expected to appear in the A, B and C-Class in the coming years. Mercedes is apparently planning a 168 hp turbocharged 1.2-liter triple for the C-Class. Over in Münich, the next generation 1-series is already being developed to cope with the vibrations of a three cylinder and the next 3 will likely follow the same path.
