SYDNEY- She may be a glamorous beauty queen, but Sophie Lavers will still get up in the morning and eat peanut butter on toast for breakfast. Ms Lavers, 24, from Canberra, was crowned Miss World Australia at a ceremony in Sydney, beating 19 other hopefuls. The beauties were judged in categories including Best Talent, Healthy Body Image and Sports and Fitness. When Sophie Lavers was announced the winner, she grinned, accepted a large bouquet of roses and sat on a giant red throne. The sparkly tiara was a little too big for her head and she mouthed to the crowd: "My crown doesn't fit". The 63rd Annual Miss Iraq / Iraq's Queen of Beauty contest was concluded in Nineveh- Iraq on March 17th, Zeena Zahawi, A 23 year old Model and Fashion Design student from Baghdad won the event. Talat Model Management is still in negotiations with Miss World organizers and has not confirmed entry yet despite the fact that we received the 2009 Miss World license. Iraq's Maiden of Beauty was Aure Arnulf, 22 from Baghdad who works in Public Relations, she will represent Iraq in Miss Earth 2009. ST. THOMAS - A high school graduate's dream of becoming a journalist died early Monday morning when her young life suddenly ended in a car crash. A single-car accident claimed the life of reigning St. Thomas Carnival Queen Karence DeCosta, 18, several hours after she joined 286 Charlotte Amalie High School seniors for the institution's 79th commencement exercise on Sunday. Police spokeswoman Melody Rames said in a prepared statement that the accident happened at 2:15 a.m. on Veterans Drive. DeCosta was killed on impact. The male passenger was uninjured, Rames said. DeCosta was driving a Toyota Corolla west on Veterans Drive when she apparently lost control of the car and struck the wall and railing at Blyden Marine Terminal and then struck the concrete base of a utility pole. The Miss World representatives attending the Confederations Cup in South Africa were treated to a day at some of Johannesburg’s most popular attractions. They began the day with a visit to Lesedi Cultural Village where they learnt how the local people lived and enjoyed local delicacies including stewed Ostrich. Miss World Ksenia Sukhinova has returned to South Africa, where she won her title in December, to take part in a number of events in the build up to the FIFA Confederations Cup. She has been joined by 8 Miss World countries who will support the eight nations competing during the tournament (14th-28th June 2009). A precursor to the FIFA World Cup due to take place in 2010, the Confederations Cup will see 2006 World Cup winners Italy and host nation South Africa take on continental champions Iraq, Egypt, Brazil, USA, New Zealand, and Spain.
