אם נגדיר את מפתח הצמצם בצורה הכי פשוטה, הגדרתו תהיה - גודל פתח העדשה בעת הצילום. בעת הלחיצה על כפתור הצילום (shutter release button) נפתח פתח קטן המאפשר לחיישן המצלמה הצצה לסצינה שאותה אנו מעוניינים לצלם. ערך מפתח הצמצם שהגדרנו הוא זה שיקבע את גודל הפתח המדובר. ככל שהפתח יהיה גדול יותר כך גם יותר אור יכנס - וההפך.
ערך מפתח הצמצם מוגדר ומסומן ב f-stops, כגו...
