The 2009 championship is currently taking place in England. The final will be take place at Lord's on Sunday 21 June 2009. The group stage consists of four groups of three. The top two countries from each group go through to the Super Eights which will be comprised of two groups of four. The top two sides from each of those groups proceed to the semi-finals to be played at Trent Bridge and The Oval. The event is organised by the sport's governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC). The tournament consists of 12 teams and is contested by all Test-playing nations plus qualifiers. The championship is expected to be held around every two years. The inaugural event, the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, was staged in South Africa from 11-24 September 2007.
