Filed under: Hybrid , Racing 2009 has not been a good season for the McLaren team and defending world driving champion Lewis Hamilton. Nonetheless, the team - along with Ferrari - are the only ones still persevering with the new kinetic energy recovery systems ( KERS ). This weekend in Hungary, the efforts finally paid off with the first-ever victory for a car equipped with the hybrid electric drive system. The KERS evidently helped Hamilton to immediately pick up two places before the first turn as he moved from his fourth qualifying position to second. After closing on Renault driver Fernando Alonso for 12 laps, Hamilton took the lead as the Spanish driver pitted for fresh tires. McLaren will likely continue to use KERS through the remainder of 2009.
