Is It Better To Have -http://blog.mydomain.com Or Blog On Wordpress With Links To Mydomain?

We are trying to create blogs for SEO reasons. Is it better to have a blog software installed on our own site to create a URL like - http://blog.mydomain.com or will a blog on wordpress site with links to our site achieve the same/better result? I'm told that we will continue to own the content even if it is hosted on wordpress...so I guess we are fine there. The main concern - which approach will help us to organically improve our rankings in the search engines. Any insight into this is appreciated.
